PDP begs Obasanjo to return
Here, the story (according to Thisday newspaper) says Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has once again appealed to former president Olusegun Obasanjo to return to the party.
The Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Walid Jibrin, who made the appeal also called on all those predicting doom for the party to have a rethink and come to join the party to rebuild and reposition it ahead of the 2019 general election.
Jibrin made the call against the backdrop of the outburst by Obasanjo that the PDP was gasping for breath.
Obasanjo was reported to have attended the party’s meeting in Abuja.
However, the former president in his response to the report, denied attending any event convened by the party.
His words: “Those who know me, know that I have publicly announced my quitting partisan politics and those who will believe the purported story will believe anybody who tells him that his or her mother is not a woman.
“If I quit a party when it was alive and seemingly united, how could I go back to a now divided, factionalised party gasping for breath?”
But, Jubrin in a veiled reference to Obasanjo’s dismissal of his former party, said contrary to insinuations by some persons, PDP was not by any means gasping for breath, but alive and kicking.
He said such assertion existed only in the imagination of those making it.
He, however, urged the former president and others to who left the party to return and join hands to rebuild the party.
Jibrin said the party would gladly receive Obasanjo back into its fold.
VERDICT: Over time, we have seen that PDP misses OBJ’s presence and influence. The moment he tore his membership card publicly last year (which CAB also reported), it was quite obvious that the former ruling party was in for a hard time. Forget the fact that they were the ruling party then…Had OBJ remained with the party, PMB would have found it a bit difficult winning the presidential election for sure, though he had wide appeal among the masses and even the international community at the time. Scorecard was 21-16 i.e in terms of states won by PMB and GEJ, but with OBJ remaining, it would probably have been so close or even a tie which would ultimately prompt a run-off and at that point, anything could have happened you would agree with me.
Nowadays, OBJ enjoys the audience of the President because he, apparently, isn’t with the opposition party anymore, he has chose to sit on the fence even though some say he is All Progressives Congress (APC) at heart. You see him sneak in and out of Aso Rock at will, wining and dining with PMB on a weekly or forthnightly basis. I tell you, the moment he does have a rethink and returns to the PDP. The romance with Mr President wouldn’t happen anymore. PMB will surely ‘change am for am’ as we say in local parlance. Lol!
Republican national security officials sign open letter warning against Donald Trump being the most reckless US president ever
Here, gist is that many long-time Republican foreign policy and national security officials, at the time, did issue their most vociferous repudiation of Donald Trump to date, saying the GOP presidential nominee, if elected, “would be the most reckless president in American history”.
Below is the full gist:
In an open letter signed by 50 fixtures from decades of Republican Pentagons, State Departments, White Houses and Treasuries, they highlighted Trump’s “alarming ignorance” of basic international affairs, his competence at understanding US national interests and his temperament.
“From a foreign policy perspective, Donald Trump is not qualified to be president and commander-in-chief,” states the letter, which was first reported by the New York Times and includes several top aides from the George W. Bush administration.
“Indeed, we are convinced that he would be a dangerous president and would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being.”
The former officials, many of whom are likely candidates to staff any Republican president’s administration, added that Trump “lacks the character, values, and experience” to hold the highest office in the land. It was the latest sign of traditional Republicans, usually a fractious group, striking at Trump while the nominee reels under signs of cratering poll numbers and self-inflicted political wounds.
Many of the signatories have made their doubts known before. A March letter published at the online national security salon “War on The Rocks” sounded warnings on Trump’s character, policies and fssitness for office. It included many who also signed the current letter, including George W Bush’s homeland security secretary Michael Chertoff; ex-Pentagon under secretary for policy and ambassador to Turkey Eric Edelman; Condoleezza Rice aide Philip Zelikow; John McCain advisers Richard Fontaine and Kori Schake; and former US ambassador to Iraq Robert Blackwill.
But the previous letter was penned in the midst of the Republican primary, when several other candidates remained competitive in the race. For dozens of high-profile intelligence officials to rebuke their own party’s nominee with the general election officially underway is yet another indication of the unprecedented nature of Trump’s candidacy.
The new letter also arrives amid heightened concerns over Trump’s posture toward Russia – the former reality TV star has lavished unusual praise on the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, while his campaign manager, Paul Manafort, has been scrutinized for holding ties to Russian politicians. Former CIA acting director Michael Morrell, who has endorsed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, did insinuate that Putin is manipulating an unwitting Trump.
Signing the new letter are former CIA and NSA director Michael Hayden, whose antipathy to Trump has become highly public in recent months, and John Negroponte, a senior official in the Reagan, George HW Bush and Bill Clinton administrations and George W Bush’s first director of national intelligence. So has George W Bush’s White House Iraq and Afghanistan adviser, Meghan O’Sullivan, who is held in high esteem amongst congressional Republican internationalists.
The new letter also contains harsher language than the old. While the March letter compared Trump to a “racketeer”, the new one flatly says Trump “lacks the temperament to be president”. It also calls into question his fitness to wield “command of the US nuclear arsenal”.
“Unlike previous presidents who had limited experience in foreign affairs, Mr Trump has shown no interest in educating himself,” the letter states. “He continues to display an alarming ignorance of basic facts of contemporary international politics.”
The Clinton campaign has also sought to cast a spotlight on Trump’s competence to be commander-in-chief as voters grow increasingly alarmed over national security. The Democratic national convention featured a cadre of generals, admirals and former officials from Republican administrations making the case against Trump in primetime, homing in on his erratic behavior and wayward statements on US foreign policy.
VERDICT: Over time, precisely just a little below two years when it all started, this whole Donald Trump saga, for me, has turned to a real comedy that never seems to end. Lol! Am not well grounded in American politics but the little I know since I got hold of political matters while growing up is that America practices a two-party system i.e The Democrats and the Republicans and history has shown that they take turns in occupying the highest office in the land mostly eight years of two terms each being four years. Now, on the strength of trend, it should be the turn of the Republicans, however, I repeat, however, this time it’s looking like that tradition is gonna be flouted. An upset (maybe I should call it that) is on the horizon because Mr Trump has stepped on too many toes, not just within the US but globally. He has abused, ridiculed and threatened everything that has breath under the sun including the fishes in the oceans, earthworms in the soil, birds in the air and even my person (at least am African, and he has taking swipes at Africans repeatedly in time past). Truth is that he is hated around the world. America stands to lose her respect, authority, dignity, integrity, etc should Trump be elected in November.
It’s so bad that lots of his party members have no confidence in him and are turning against him. The signs are there for all to see. He hasn’t just got it in him to be president of the earth’s most powerful nation. His utterances, beliefs, ideologies, body language and so on and so forth. Would certainly be an error. No right-thinking American would cast his or her vote for such a man
To Americans, I say a word is enough for the wise 🙂
84-year-old woman dies celebrating her grandson’s success at the Rio Olympics
Story here is that 84-year-old grandmother of a Thai Olympic bronze medal winner collapsed and died while celebrating the weightlifter’s success in Rio during the recently-concluded Olympic Games.
The octogenarian was watching a live broadcast of her 20-year-old grandson, Sinphet Kruaithong, take third place in the 56kg division.
However, a viral video showed the jubilant scene of cheering fans in his rural hometown transform into tragedy after his grandmother, Subin Khongthap, collapsed while watching the competition on a projector.
“The initial assumption is that she died from heart failure — but we have to wait for the hospital’s result,” said Somwang Prangprakoan a police officer in northeastern Surin province.
“I’m not sure if she was too excited, or if maybe she was already ill,” he added.
During an interview with local press ahead of the competition, Sinphet’s grandmother said she missed her grandson but was overjoyed by his sporting journey.
“I cheer him on, fight! Fight! I miss my grandson and want him to be successful. He does this for the country to bring the gold medal back,” she said.
Sinphet was the second Thai athlete to win a medal in Rio, following a gold secured by a female weightlifter in the 48kg category.
Sopita Tanasan, 21, is the fourth Thai woman ever to win a weightlifting Olympic gold.
VERDICT: Awww! OMG! What a sad story this is! An anti-climax indeed. May madam Subin Khongthap’s soul rest in peace and her family have the fortitude to bear the sad, unfortunate loss.
My government is for the youth, says Pres. Buhari
Here, Pres. Buhari said the roles that Nigerian youths played in the 2015 presidential election that brought him to office would never be forgotten.
He said for this reason, his government belongs to the youth.
The President said this in his message to the youth on the occasion of the 2016 International Youth Day recently.
According to him, his administration was committed to improving the quality of lives of youths, consequently, the government would continue to create opportunities for them to achieve their dreams and ambitions.
He then enumerated the various programmes and policies so far put in place by his administration for the youth.
He said: “Today is International Youth Day. I am delighted to commemorate this occasion, the second of such celebration since I took office.
“The roles that young Nigerians played in the historic election that brought our government to power will never be forgotten. This government belongs to you.
“I would like to use this opportunity to assure you of our commitment to improving the quality of your lives and to creating opportunities for you to achieve your dreams and ambitions.
“We are mindful of the fact that Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world. Those young people are immensely energetic and talented, consistently blazing the trail in the arts, sports, business and technology. We are proud of what you have done and what you are able to do.
“N-Power, our job creation scheme, for which applications are ongoing, will employ 500,000 of you in agriculture, education, healthcare and technology.
“The Aso Villa Demo Day will soon bring 30 of the most innovative young Nigerians to the State House to showcase their talent in providing technology-based solutions to some of our most challenging problems.
“The Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), part of our N500bn Social Investment Programme, will provide soft loans to thousands of young entrepreneurs across the country. These are just some of the many initiatives we have designed and are implementing for you.
“You are the strength and future of our country. Please be assured that this administration will create an enabling environment for you to realize your potentials.”
VERDICT: I’m a Buhari fan anyday but a spade has got to be called one. We (youths) are yet to feel the impact of his government, one year on. Millions of youths are out there languishing in poverty, full of despair, unsure and scared of what the future holds for them and even lamenting. Large proportion of them who voted in the government and for which Pres. Buhari admitted here in this particular news piece are right now ruing that decision.
Again, Mr President’s government is for the youth, how much of the youth occupies his present government? When I ask such question I mean those in the range of 30-45 years old. Mr Presido, your government is for the youth yet you employed a 83-year-old man in the person of Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye, an aide to Chief Bola Tinubu the APC National Leader to boss the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). That’s simply ridiculous! What happened to brilliant, first class university graduates and Master’s degree holders who are geniuses in ICT and much younger?
Left to me o, the likes of the NCC chief, Lai Mohammed, Chris Ngige, etc, would not be in my cabinet. I subscribe to the widespread opinion that young technocrats whether graduates from home here or abroad would do the magic in terms of turning around the fortunes of Nigeria. Until godfatherism, tribalism and nepotism in – appointing government officials – are put in the rubbish bin where they belong, am afraid we gonna remain where we are right now and have been. Did I hear someone say Federal Character? Oh yes! Even at that, it doesn’t stop technocrats, geniuses occupying the positions, they are the solution, they are the answer! High time round pegs gotta be placed in round holes abeg!
Egyptian judo fighter sent home for failing to shake hand of his Israeli opponent at Rio Olympics
Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby was sent home from the Rio Olympics after refusing to shake the hand of Israeli Or Sasson following the end of their bout, the International Olympic Committee reported at the time.
Middle East politics spilled onto the judo mat at the Rio Olympics on Friday as El Shehaby snubbed Sasson after being comfortably beaten in the judo bout, a major breach of etiquette – and was booed by the Rio crowd.
Consequently, he was sent home by his own team and reprimanded by the IOC for such behaviour.
The IOC acknowledged that the rules of judo do not oblige players to shake hands but said El Shehaby’s behaviour went against the Games’ “rules of fair play” and “spirit of friendship“.
“The Egyptian Olympic Committee has also strongly condemned the actions of Mr Islam El Shehaby and has sent him home,” the IOC said in a statement. “The President of the National Olympic Committee issued a statement saying they respected all athletes and all nations at the Olympic Games.
“The Disciplinary Commission (DC) considered that his behaviour at the end of the competition was contrary to the rules of fair play and against the spirit of friendship embodied in the Olympic Values,” the IOC said.
“As well as a severe reprimand, the DC has asked the Egyptian Olympic Committee to ensure in future that all their athletes receive proper education on the Olympic Values before coming to the Olympic Games,” the IOC added.
The athlete, who is an ultraconservative Salafi, had come under pressure from hardline Islamists on social media and from television pundits not to participate in the match.
“You will shame Islam. If you lose, you will shame an entire nation and yourself,” one comment read.
“We don’t want to think what will happen if you lost to an Israeli. Victory will give you nothing. How can you cooperate with a murderous nation?”
The Egyptian did, indeed, lose. With a minute and a half left in the bout, Sasson earned an automatic victory with two throws of El Shehaby.
He then refused the outstretched hand of the Israeli athlete, and walked away shaking his head, leading to boos ringing out around the arena.
The referee called El Shehaby back to the mat and obliged him to bow, as is customary in the Japanese martial art. The Egyptian gave a quick nod of his head and walked off.
VERDICT: El Shehaby’s actions is absolutely preposterous and embarrassing!!! Hope EOC’s response to that is not a mere grandstanding, perhaps it could be. Arrant nonsense! It should be condemned in its entirety. Racism, religion, politics should never be married together with sports especially international sporting events such as the Olympics, World Championship, world Cup, etc.
Sports is and remains a strong unifying factor.
Nollywood actress Funke Akindele’s real age is 44, age reduction now a trend in Nollywood, producer cries out
Gist here is that Nollywood top-earning, A-List actress Funke Akindele popularly known as ‘Jenifa’ has come underfire for falsifying her age. A couple of days ago, she did celebrate her birthday telling her fans that she is 39 only for an irritated producer in the industry who has seen Jenifa’s official credentials in the past to counter her by calling that a ‘white lie’.
However, the producer pleaded for anonymity while telling an entertainment news agency that she (Akindele Olufunke Ayotunde) was actually was born on August 24th 1972. He insisted that it’s not just her alone that is involved in this age falsification ‘ish’ in the industry.
Funke abi Jenifa is yet to respond as at press time.
VERDICT: Hmmn! So this age falsification virus is not just limited or restricted to Nigerian sports, beauty pageantry and the labour market eh? Even in the Nollywood? Why? For what? Is it necessary? Na wah o! I always advocate one being himself or herself no matter what. By doing so, if your potential benefactor wants you, he or she wants you and if not, you move on… Another opportunity will come someday definitely. What will be, will definitely be. There is nothing like having integrity, believe me. This Funke story now brings to mind Mr President’s launch of #ChangeBeginsWithMe that is being roundly mocked and condemned by citizens right now.
I think it’s a good move by Mr President if you ask me and really, the change needs to begin with ourselves. We always chorus that those at the top are corrupt and ruining the country with their high taste and tendency for corruption but the home truth is that corruption has eaten so deep into the fabric of the Nigerian society sotey the little child on the street is dishonest and corrupt.
Truck driver parks his truck in the middle of the road to pray, causing traffic logjam along Ore-Ijebu road
Loool! The truck driver in the pix parked his truck in the middle of the highway along Ore-Ijebu Ode Road, got down, put his mat on the ground and began to pray. Definitely, it caused a traffic logjam and commuters who found it amusing alighted from their vehicles and began to snap the eccentric driver 😀
VERDICT: As funny as this appears and which made travellers and commuters to alight from their vehicles and start snapping shots of the scene, it is a silly thing to do…How ridiculous religious fanaticism has become. You stop your lorry, trailer abi truck in the middle of a busy highway and lay a mat on the ground to say prayers. What if you get crushed by oncoming vehicles? How about the unnecessary traffic jam he caused on the day. Imagine there was an emergency for instance and ambulance needed to convey a critically ill person or an accident victim to a hospital. Well, it’s only in Nigeria that this kinda ‘crime’ does happen…Mscheeew!
Also, we as a people need to re-engineer our values, it’s not every situation that arises that we dip our hands into our pockets and bring out our smartphones to snap and be the first to put on social media. Of what gain will it be. Rather than harass the man in question and possibly alert the authorities, people there found it funny and interesting and began snapping. Some even taking selfies alongside it. Lol! Smh!
Amidst economic recession, Emir of Kano Lamido Sanusi acquires N132m worth of Rolls Royce
Here the gist is that the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor just before the incumbent Mr God Emefiele, bought a brand new Rolls Royce for Sallah which just passed few day ago. The Emir did share the pix of the new car which is all white in colour on the social media even as the Eid el-Kabir celebrations by muslim faithful were in full gear.
Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II
On his official instagram page, he captioned the shared pixes thus: “Has just been added” However, some findings revealed that the price of 2016 Rolls-Royce Phantom is estimated at $417,825 (about N132 million).
VERDICT: OMG! **Angry face** In this period of recession where almost every one is crying blood? Damn! N132m worth of vehicle probably added to an already ‘overloaded’ garage full of luxury cars by a so-called traditional ruler!?! This is a mark of pure insensitivity and iresponsiblity, am sorry to say. Also, he shamelessly had to put it on social media thereby reminding one of the likes of Wizkid, Davido and other young artistes who are obviously suffering from youthful exuberance 🙂
