Four bizarre & touching news headlines/events in recent times + of course, my view…

Once upon a time, actually it was recent o! These events all happened within the last three weeks. They are absolutely bizarre and touching, however, one outta them all is in no way touching. You may read on:-

Indian squash player Ravi Dixit plans to sell own kidney to raise funds to participate in February Asian games, changes mind later
An Indian squash player Ravi Dixit, ranked 211 in the world had put his kidney up for sale at 800,000 Rupees (£8,230) in order to raise funds to play in next month’s South Asian Games. However, he has backtracked on his plan.
Dixit, 23, said: “I never intended to sell my kidney. This statement was made at the spur of the moment for which I am truly sorry.
Indian law forbids selling a kidney and Dixit’s parents were against the idea.
Dixit apologised for his comments in a letter issued through the Squash Rackets Federation of India, but insisted he still needed sponsorship to continue his career.
Together, we will figure out a way to deal with this crisis,” said his father.
I funded my daughter’s wedding with Ravi’s winnings. Since he has to support the family as well, he cannot use much of what he gets for himself.

VERDICT: Thank God this never happened in fact he did have a rethink. This would have been the craziest thing to do in recent times I tell you. Not as if India is that poor as much not to be able to afford to send Dixit to the Games. Always thought that this situation of athletes being in such sorry and unpalatable situation to the point of taking drastic and unsavoury decisions was limited to Africa where I come from. Now I know better.
For me, I would say Dixit should be heavily supported in his ambition and, also, had he not come out to debunk the news, be considered for a national award in India. Can you beat this kind of patriotism and dedication by an athlete? So impressive, bizarre and touching indeed.

Celine Dion and brother, Daniel (right)

Daniel Dion, Celine Dion’s brother, dies of cancer days after losing husband to cancer too
Daniel Dion, the brother of veteran musician Celine Dion, died on Saturday after a battle with cancer, aged 59.

This is according to a family statement.

The eighth of 14 children born to Thérèse Tanguay-Dion and Adhémar Dion, Daniel Dion spent his final days at Maison Adhémar-Dion, a palliative care center in Terrebonne, Quebec, Canada.

He leaves behind two adult daughters, two grandchildren and an extended family of nieces and nephews. His funeral will take place later this month at St-Simon-et-Jude in Quebec, where the Dion children were raised.

Taking in consideration the reserved character of their deceased brother, the family wishes respect and discretion from the media,” the family said.

The news comes as Celine Dion prepares for the funeral of her husband, René Angélil, who died on Thursday (a week ago) at age 73 after a long battle with throat cancer.

His sister, Claudette Dion, told the Journal de Montreal on Friday that her brother was suffering from a similar illness to Angélil’s. She said he was admitted to Maison Adhémar-Dion with cancer of the throat, tongue and brain.

VERDICT: Awww! One man suffered throat, tongue and brain cancer?!? Jeeez! I feel so sorry for Celine right now. Five days after she lost her lovely, wealthy husband of over three decades, René Angélil, a man who fell in love with her dazzling voice at the age of 12 and managed her all through her career bringing her to the limelight; she lost her dear brother, Daniel to the same disease which claimed Angélil. She could be the most sorrowful person on earth right now as a matter of fact. 😦

Celine had few months ago announced that her husband was dying of cancer and she wanted to stay by him until the end. This limited her public appearances and she was by his sick bed feeding him thrice daily and so on.

The Dion family definitely have something with cancer, no doubt. Something drastic needs to be done fast if you ask me. Remember it’s said, early detection and treatment is key to killing the monster.

May the souls of Sir René Angélil and Mr Daniel rest in peace.

Super Eagles vice-captain Ogienyi Onazi waits by the corner to buy ‘akara’ somewhere in Jos
Super Eagles assistant captain Ogienyi Onazi shows his very humble nature by waiting (with his friends) at the corner to buy akara that was still being fried when he was back home for the Xmas break. Interestingly, he did share this pix on social media by himself with the caption: “That moment when the #Jos weather is too cold and you’ve got to book for your #Akara to step it down.”

VERDICT: Lol! Wow! Vice-captain Onazi’s action during the Xmas break was indeed the Visual of the Week in the immediate past one. See this: Onazi waits for ‘frying’ akara
This is quite bizarre at the same time touching. Well, what can I say? To some people, it’s a public stunt aimed at attracting more attention to himself, to some others, it is his nature. I would rather join the train of thought that it is his nature. At least, based on the little I see of him while playing for the Super Eagles on the pitch and, stories which I hear, of places he visits when in Nigeria as well as things he does. This is impressive and inspiring as well if you ask me. He is indeed a ‘home boy’ abi ‘omonile’ up there in Jos. How humble and open he is! Hehehehe!
Some people say they wonder whether the likes of Mikel Obi and Osaze Odemwingie can do stuff like this 😀

SSS official polishes shoe of Interior Minister Abdulrahman Dambazzau with own white handkerchief in public
It took place at a NSCDC-organized event at their academy in a suburb in Abuja. Before I speak ma mind, you may watch it if you have not. Here it is: Shoe-shining SSS official

VERDICT: This is definitely not touching…Lol! Rather it is so so BIZARRE! **Can’t stop laughing** Was the State Securtiy Service (SSS) official so high on drugs, possessed by an evil spirit or under a charm? How on earth would he have done this in the open? In the first place, should he do it at all? Dambazzau has got what they call stewards back home and maybe in the office too.

Some say it is humility and no big deal in it. Even the NSCDC spokesman, Okey Emmanuel, shamelessly defended the official’s action stating it is a ‘mark of respect’…Mark of respect ma foot!!! Overseas, would this embarrassing and disgraceful scenario happen in a setting like this? Imagine this is watched right now abroad. Lol!

  1. The SSS thing I see here, to some people, it is no big deal but honestly speaking I think it is a BIG shame. Indeed an embarassment
